    Your child’s first visit

    vide

At what age should a child have their first visit to the dentist?

Ideally, dental visits should take place within six months of the first tooth erupting, or by the age of one, according to the Canadian Dental Association. This way, dental care begins early so your child learns that dental visits are part of regular healthcare. Contact us at the Louise Magnan Dental Centre to discuss the ideal time for their first visit!

    Procedure for the first visit

The first visit should be a pleasant experience for your child, helping them become familiar with the clinic environment and build a trusting relationship. These visits also allow us to detect any problems as early as possible. However, if you suspect a problem, bring your child to the dentist without delay, regardless of their age.

If you are apprehensive about going to the dentist yourself, ask your spouse or another family member to take care of the appointment. If your child senses your discomfort, they likely will too. If possible, avoid discussing the visit beforehand. We will put them at ease and reassure them with carefully chosen words and clear explanations.

    Dental hygiene at home

Dental hygiene starts at birth! Be sure to begin regular dental hygiene care at home early. First, clean your baby’s gums with a damp cloth from birth to get them used to it and ensure a clean environment. As soon as the first teeth appear, it’s time to brush them with a soft toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of toothpaste, morning and night.

How often should you see a dentist?

In reality, the frequency of visits depends on each person’s dental needs. The goal of the examination is to detect problems early in order to avoid potentially more costly complications! For most people, an examination every six months is sufficient. Your dentist will guide you based on your personal oral hygiene, your prevention or treatment needs, the amount of tartar buildup on your teeth, and other factors.

    Ask yourself the following questions:

    • Do I floss every day?
    • Do I brush my teeth twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and follow my dentist’s instructions on how to brush properly?
    • Do I eat too many sugary and/or acidic foods?
    • Do I smoke?
    • Have I ever had cavities or gum disease?
    • Is my overall health good?
    • All of these factors influence your oral health. The answers to these questions will help you and your dentist determine how many checkups you need. It is worth noting that you should not determine your dental needs based on the coverage of your dental care plan.

Do I need X-rays every time?

The frequency with which you need X-rays also depends on your oral health. A healthy adult who hasn’t had cavities or other problems for several years probably doesn’t need X-rays at every appointment.

However, if your dental situation is less stable and your dentist needs to monitor your progress, you may need X-rays more often. Remember that dental X-rays emit very low levels of radiation and are an essential tool for your dentist during an examination!

Is it necessary for my dentist to wear gloves and a mask, and how can I tell if he is using clean instruments?

Your overall health is also very important to everyone at the Louise Magnan Dental Centre. One of the ways we help you stay healthy is by preventing the spread of germs. That’s why we use protective measures against bacteria, such as gloves and masks.

Dentists and other members of the dental team wash their hands regularly. We sterilize the equipment used in the office and clean the furniture and equipment in the examination rooms after each patient. These precautions are necessary because patients don’t always know if they are sick.

If you would like to know how these measures are implemented at the Louise Magnan Dental Centre, please ask us about our procedures. We adhere to very strict standards and conduct the necessary tests to ensure the quality of our sterilization.

Furthermore, even with these precautions in place, it is essential that you inform us of any changes in your health. This will help us suggest the best treatment options for you.

    Payments and Insurance

Why won't my dentist simply accept payment from my insurance company? What can I do, and why is dental care so expensive?

Dental Insurance and Payment Options in Montreal, Villeray, Saint-Michel, Parc-Extension, Rosemont & Plateau Mont-Royal

Dental plans help patients in Montreal, Villeray, Saint-Michel, Parc-Extension, Rosemont, and Plateau Mont-Royal manage the cost of dental treatments and are often offered by employers. These plans reimburse patients based on the level of coverage provided.

During your visit, we will create a personalized treatment plan based on your oral health needs. However, your treatment needs may differ from what is covered by your dental insurance plan, and you always have the option to accept or decline any recommended treatment.

If you choose to proceed with treatment, you are responsible for the associated costs. Your insurance provider will reimburse you according to your coverage, while any remaining balance is the patient’s responsibility. We can offer flexible payment plans to help make your care more accessible. However, treatment decisions should not be based solely on insurance coverage, but rather on your oral health needs.

If you are unable to afford dental care, even with a payment plan, you may consider the following options:

    • Contact a social services agency to determine if you qualify for government-funded dental care Visit a dental school where supervised students provide treatment at reduced costs

Dental services may seem expensive, but the cost reflects the high level of care required. Unlike hospital or medical visits in Canada, dental care is not fully covered, and expenses such as staff salaries, advanced equipment, and operational costs contribute to the overall price of treatment.
